Saturday, March 22, 2014South Jersey Surfrider Foundation Community Clean up Bayside By the Brigantine Bridge
A BIG thank you goes out to our friends at the South Jersey Surfrider Foundation for organizing a community cleanup in Brigantine and to the volunteers who gave their time to help clean up our community. Surfrider provided trash & recycling bags, gloves, trash pickers, and buckets.
About 15 volunteers came out on Saturday, with half of those individuals living outside of Brigantine (this in itself speaks volumes about Surfrider’s mission). Although the volunteer turn out was on the smaller side, the volunteers’ effort were not so. Vanessa Schnauffer, a local Brigantine resident and Brigantine Green Team volunteer, helped to clear the large area on the west side of the bridge (before and after picture shown below). Vanessa and other volunteers noted that plastic water bottles made up 95% of the material picked up. Recyclables and trash are sorted into clear and black bags so that Brigantine’s Public Works can easily identify them during pick up.
The Green Team and organizations like our Marine Mammal Stranding Center are so grateful for organizations like Surfrider who commit their time and resources to help clean up our waterways. The Surfrider Saturday clean up promoted a partnership with Jack Johnson’s All At Once nonprofit activist network. The Surfrider Foundation South Jersey Chapter is a 2014 All At Once nonprofit and will attend Jack Johnson’s concert at the Mann Music Center in Philadelphia on June 6, 2014.
